The Asian Regional Energy
Initiative of the IEI
Shell Foundation’s Breathing Space programme – discussion in
Bangalore
IEI was one of the
organisations invited by Shell Foundation to a meeting in
Bangalore on the 9th November 2006. The purpose was to explain
their Breathing Space Programme and indicate areas in which
potential partners could be involved. The Breathing Space
programme aims to reduce indoor air pollution (IAP) –
primarily the smoke from traditional cook-stoves – by
designing stoves with lower smoke emission and fuel use, and
getting them to people’s homes through market-oriented and
commercially viable approaches. They hope that in the next
five years, 20 million improved stoves will be sold in five
countries, of which 5 to 7 million will be in seven states of
India. Potential partners who could be supported by Shell
Foundation would have to contribute in one/more of the
following: (1) conducting approved independent research and
developing improved stoves as a result, (2) supplying
--manufacturing and distributing -- improved stoves, using
their existing infrastructure and supply lines, (3)
demonstrating the product face-to-face, using local links and
influence, and (4) co-ordinating regional activities and
providing business advice to assist the supply chain.
ESD – commemoration of 10 Volumes of publication

issue, ten volumes of Energy for Sustainable Development (ESD),
the journal of the International Energy Initiative, have been
