Energy
enterprises for development in rural areas: the case of clean cooking
As mentioned in our last quarterly newsletter (March ’07), IEI’s
Bangalore branch is demonstrating an example of a rural
energy-development model. The demonstration is being supported chiefly
by the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, Germany
(through its third round of Sustainable Energy Project Support). The
main purpose is to address the need for clean and efficient cooking
fuel for the economically-disadvantaged in rural India. While one
village demonstration will take place during the project period of a
year, this could be used to facilitate larger-scale replication.
On the basis of suitability criteria drawn up during the initial stage
of the project and a survey of several villages, one village in Tumkur
district of the State of Karnataka has been selected for the
demonstration.
A dairy that can house about 100 cows will be established. This will be
followed by the construction of biogas plants to be shared between
adjoining households. Every home in this village will then be supplied
with biogas (generated from cow dung). This fuel supply will be
sustained through linkage with the dairy whose revenue from milk sales
will accrue to the village co-operative. Construction of the dairy is
in progress and plans for the biogas plants have been finalised. [Click here for a

Energy for Sustainable Development (ESD),
the journal of the International Energy Initiative: production and
circulation
From the 1st of April 2007, the Regional Energy Initiative – Asia has
been directly involved with the production of IEI’s journal Energy for Sustainable Development.
This includes editorial processing, publishing, web site management,
and circulation.
A new web site dedicated to ESD,

is being developed. The current issue (Vol. XI, No.2) can be accessed

Shift of the
office
The office of the Regional Energy Initiative – Asia and Energy for Sustainable Development
is being moved to another location in Bangalore. The new address, valid
